Methods of Creative Thinking and Brainstorming

First documented in the 1950s by advertising executive Alex Osborn, the method of creative problem solving widely known as “brainstorming” challenges users to form unlikely connections between unrelated items. These creative methods can be used to develop new solutions and ideas for a variety of purposes from new advertising slogans to solutions to unsolved problems.

The statement “let’s brainstorm” is frequently used in groups, assuming everyone understands the set of principles and steps that can help generate a list of divergent ideas, but this is rarely the case. In this session, you will learn a variety of methods of creative ideation and brainstorming using real-world examples. We will look at the different words used to describe these creative methods, how to prepare for a brainstorming session, and some pitfalls to avoid.

This session is designed for educators or those looking to learn a new skill; you will walk away having completed several brainstorming sessions and be able to conduct your own sessions with friends, colleagues, and students in the future.
