Podcasting for Educators

Nearly since the first day Adam Curry and Dave Winer kicked off this RSS-feed deployed media phenomenon we now referred to as podcasting in 2004, there have been technologists and educators taking advantage of unique qualities of this experience as an excellent means to disseminate information as well as chatter. Over the past several years, the format has gained widespread mainstream listenership. And in parallel, the technology barriers have nearly vanished -- making an act of engaging in podcasting as easy as hitting “record” on the memo tool on your smartphone, and uploading the results to a free podcast hosting platform. But rather than focus on the history of the form, we will focus on efforts to draw on the activity of podcasting itself as a media practice to drive engagement in the classroom.

The first half of this session consists of a walkthrough presented by Matt Griffin, how he produces and hosts Talking Additive, a 3D printing podcast made possible by Ultimaker. Matt will be using this guided tour as a scaffold for pointing out multiple ways to engage in this practice with students. He will also introduce three other podcasting modes you might consider using with students: a micro-podcast as a means of documenting a semester-long project, a team-authored podcast to collectively crystalize and broadcast the content, inquiry, and discussions related to a topic, and an “oral history” style piece bringing together student designers and external stakeholders to explore the progress of an engineering design project.

Session Leader

Matt Griffin is the host and producer of the Talking Additive podcast, and the Global Webinar series for Ultimaker, where he is the Director of Community Development. He is also a co-founder of Construct3D.

We'll wrap at 5:30 pm, but stick around! The first meeting of the Construct3D Summer Symposium study group kicks off immediately at the end of this session, to help all of our community prepare for the spirited round table for Thursday taking a hard look at remote learning data science and what it means for all of us.
